Haratin is a personal booklet, a recollection of photographs and testimonies from my journey trying to understand Mauritania’s slavery apparatus.

In 2018 I conducted a photographic investigation about traditional slavery in Mauritania. Slavery was officially abolished by Mauritania's government in 1981 only. Despite this and international pressure to enforce anti-slavery measures, enslavement practices persist to this day. Media coverage on the topic is also very restricted, with many activists and journalists detained for talking about it.

The Global Slavery Index estimates that at least 90,000 people lived in slavery in Mauritania in 2018. NGOs on the ground have claimed the accurate number might actually be in the hundreds of thousands.
